Born in Rotterdam de Kooning studied first in Rotterdam and then emigrated to the USA. By the 1950's he had become a leader of the Abstract Expressionist movement, amongst his best-known works the series "Woman 1-1V" (1952-1953 New York City) with its violent, aggressive images. In his later years he worked with clay sculptures.
