The Tate Gallery is the national gallery of British art from the 16th century to the present day. It is also the national gallery of international modern art. With the British Museum, the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum it is one of the great national art museums. Opening in 1897 - it was the initiative of Henry Tate a collector of British art.
