YouTube called for professionals and amateur musicians of
all ages, locations and instruments to audition for the YouTube Symphony
Orchestra by submitting a video performance of a new piece written for
the occasion by the renowned Chinese composer Tan Dun.
Finalists were selected by a judging panel comprised of the world's most renowned orchestras. People could vote for their favorite instrumentalists on YouTube from February 14-22 2009 Winners were announced on March 2nd and were invited to travel to New York in April 2009, to participate in the YouTube Symphony Orchestra summit, and play at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. All the Tan Dun submissions were compiled into a mashup video which was premiered on You Tube on April 15th 2009 The collaborative online orchestra performed at Carnegie Hall on April 15, 2009. Selected by the YouTube community and several members of the world's most renowned orchestras, the YouTube Symphony Orchestra was made up of over 96 professional and amateur musicians from 30+ countries and territories on 6 continents and represents 26 different instruments.
