History of Wine in Victoria
Wines came to Victoria after NSW, Tasmania and WA - Tasmanian was the source of
the first vines which came with Edward Henty on board the schooner THISTLE on 19
november 1834.
In 1840 John Fawkner established 4 hectares of vines at Pascoe Vale near
Flemington to be followed by the establishment of 3 distinct wine districts: the
Melbourne metropolitan area, Geelong and the Yarra Valley. One of the early
vineyards was a 5 hectare vineyard running beside the Yarra River between Punt
Road and Anderson Street (1847) and another established by TJ Everist between
Hawthorn East and Kew bounded by Auburn Road, Barkers Road, Kildare Street and
Harcourt Street. There were numerous vineyards along Toorak Road, at Moonee
Ponds, and Sunbury
The first vines were planted in the Yarra Valley in 1837 , and in the Geelong

History: "http://www.goonawarra.com.au/" was established by James Goodall in
1858, the depression of the 1890's affected the wine growing and it was not
until the 1980's that new properties were established.
Conditions: Alluvian soils on the flat and basalt based loams on the slopes, hot
summers and cool winters.
MACEDON RANGES
Wines: Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Traminer, Cabernet
Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz.
Area: 40 minutes drive from Melbourne the vineyards and wineries of the region
are to the east and west of the Calder Highway between Gisborne, Kyneton,
Lancefield and Daylesford.
Conditions: Deep loam soil to sandy granite based loams, cool climate
YARRA VALLEY
Wines: Red wines including Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Merlot and
Pinot Noir and Shiraz. White wines including Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer,
Semillon, Marsanne, Riesling
Area: An hours drive from Melbourne Yarra Valley region - most properties are
around Coldstream, Healesville, Yarra Glen and Lillydale, an area bordered by
Emerald, Cockatoo, the Plenty River and surrounded by the Great Dividing Range,
Plenty Ranges and the Dandenongs. The Yarra River flows thro the region.
History: Began in 1837 when "http://www.yering.com/" was established by William,
James and Donald Ryrie. They planted vines - the first vineyard planting in
Victoria. Later immigrants from Europe arrived and planted vines and established
wineries.
The depression of the 1890's caused a decline, and by the 1920's the last winery
ceased operating. In the 1960's Dr John Middleton established the Mount Mary
vineyard, and in the 1980's James Halliday, "http://www.debortoli.com.au/" and
Moet & "http://www.chandon.com.au/" feature.
Now there are 100's of hectares of vines, and millions has been invested in both
the wineries and the tourist industry.
Conditions: grey-brown loams to the south and red volcanic soils to the north
and west, climate is cool.

Wines: Pinot Noir, Meunier, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon
Blanc
Conditions: extreme temperatures and alluvial soils
Where?: Take Great Western Highway to the Grampians and Pyrenees regions on the
Adelaide to Melbourne Route
NORTH EAST WINE AREA
Wines: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and
Shiraz
Where?: Rutherglen, Beechworth, Alpine Valley, King Valley
3 and half hours from Melbourne via the Hume Highway.
