REALISM c1850-c1880 Realism shocked critics and public, subjects were humble citizens instead of mythical heroes, paintings reflected the artists concern for ordinary people for whom the Industrial Revolution had caused job loses and poor working conditions for those lucky enough to find work. Artists became interested in outdoor painting, scenes depicting different weather conditions and the light at different times of the day.
