The Bauhaus was a German school of design, many of its teachers individually were very influential in subsequent movements of modern art. Bauen means "to build" and haus "house". The Bauhaus was the amalgamation of the school of art and school of crafts founded by Henry van der Velde in Weimer in 1906. Walter Gropius became head of the Bauhaus in 1919 and the staff included Klee, Kandinsky, Feininger, Albers, Moholy-Nagy, Breuer, Itten and others.
