Florence and Venice
had dominated the art world during the Renaissance but Rome became
the artistic centre in the Baroque Period. Baroque style appeared
in Europe in the late 1500's - the word baroque comes from the
Portuguese word meaning "irregularly shaped pearl" -
and was used in art to describe something which was different
from Renaissance Art - ornately decorated, dynamic and filled
with emotion. Music of the Baroque era reflected these same ideals.
