ARTS AND CRAFTS MOVEMENT

In England the Arts and Crafts movement was pioneered by William Morris and Jon Ruskin and played a role in the return of well designed, functional furniture and objects made from humble indigenous materials. A group of craftsmen - the Cotswold School - based in central england created handcrafted furniture which explored the grain of local woods.  Furniture of Gustav Stickley, Frank Lloyd Wright and the Roycrofters in US show these ideals in their furniture.  The rise of facism in Europe meant that many talented artisans left their home countries for Britain and the US.
