American born
Ansel Adams is the author of America's best landscape photographs.
In 1930 he gave up an early aspiration to be a concert pianist
and devoted himself to photography. In 1932 he founded the Group
f-64 whose name came from the smallest stop available on a large
format camera. This group of 11 photographers which included Imogen
Cunningham, Edward Weston and his son Brett exhibited together
only once in San Francisco in 1932 but they continued to meet
informally until 1935.
After Alfred Stieglitz he is probably the most influential of
all American photographers as lecturer, technician and artist.
A retrospective of his work was held at the Museum of Modern Art,
New York in 1979.
