BERENICE ABBOTT
1898-1991 "I have yet to see a fine photograph which is not a good document." Pictures on a Page by Harold Evans 1978
Abbott studied sculpture with Bourdelle and Brancusi in
Paris before working as Man Ray's assistant in 1924, working in
Europe during the "cultural ferment" of the 1920's.
She
created a documentation of New York City - Changing New York, having been inspired
by the work of Atget, - and itwas
meant to evoke "an intuition of past, present and future"
and include single images and a series of related pictures supported
by texts. Her work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New
York in 1970.
