Wadsworth Atheneum
is America's oldest public art museum, founded in 1842 and still using its
original buildings. Continually outgrowing its original building, four new
buildings were added, the Tudor-Revival Colt Memorial the Renaissance-Revival
Morgan Memorial, the neo-classical Avery Memorial, and the modern Goodwin
Building, and it has
nearly 50,000 works spanning 5,000 years. Highlights are the Hudson
River School collection, Baroque masterpieces, the Wallace Nutting
Collection of Pilgram-Century Furniture, Meissen and Sevres porcelain,
19th and 20th century American and European
art and the Amistad Foundation African-American Collection.*
