The Uffizi Gallery has a major collection of Italian art of Botticelli, Giotto, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Titian and Caravaggio. The Collection was established with the immense wealth of the Medici family, one of the most powerful families in Florence who were responsible for commissioning some of the greatest works of the Renaissance. Built in 1560-1580 the Architect Vasari used iron reinforcement to create the almost continuous wall of glass on the upper story which from 1581 was used to display the Medici family art treasures - the oldest gallery in the world. *
