The
neoclassical building was a major work by Sir Charles Barry who
designed it for the Manchester Institution for Fine Arts as a
club for the local industries, temporary exhibition gallery, life-class
and a lecture hall. Completed in 1834 it became the Art Gallery
in 1882. The building was restored in 1978 to become as closely
to the original as possible.
