The building which was constructed as a fortress in 1190 by King Philippe-Auguste to protect Paris against the Vikings, was replaced by a Renaissance style building in the reign of Francois I, and the following French kings enlarged it over the years. The most recent addition is the glass pyramid in the main courtyard designed by the architect I M Pei and opened in 1989..
