John Paul Getty was born in Minneapolis in 1892. His father had
accumulated a small oil fortune, John Paul made a fortune on his own mainly from
the oil wells of Juwait and Saudi Arabia. When he died in 1976 he
left $700 million in Getty Oil stock to the Getty Trust for "the Diffusion of
Art and General Knowledge" The Getty Center Museum Complex was opened in
Brentwood in 1999.
