The Glasgow Art
Gallery was developed by local councillor Archibald McLellan who
started to collect art in his twenties with such a museum in mind.
After his death the local council assumed responsibility for the
exhibition gallery until the present gallery opened in 1902.
original collection has been enhanced by further gifts and bequests.

Dali's Christ of St John of the Cross caused a sensation when
the Glasgow Art Gallery bought it for 8,200 pounds in 1952.
