The Glasgow Art
Gallery was developed by local councillor Archibald McLellan who
started to collect art in his twenties with such a museum in mind.
After his death the local council assumed responsibility for the
exhibition gallery until the present gallery opened in 1902. The
original collection has been enhanced by further gifts and bequests.
