Flinders
Quartet
Formed in in 2000, the Flinders Quartet has fast become an exciting
and dynamic force in Australian chamber music. Their performances have
been met with widespread public and critical acclaim.

Members of the Quartet
Erica Kennedy
is a Masters graduate of The Faculty of Music, The
University of Melbourne where she studied with William Hennessy. As a
soloist she has won numerous awards, recorded for national television
and radio and performed solos with various Australian orchestras
including the Tasmanian Symphony, the Melbourne Symphony, Orchestra
Victoria, the Soirées Musicales Orchestra and the Stonnington Symphony.
Erica has studied in the USA with the Vermeer Quartet and the Emerson
Quartet, in Switzerland with Hatto Beyerle, in Australia with the
Goldner String Quartet and the Melba Quartet and as a scholarship holder
at the Australian National Academy of Music.
Erica has worked with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra as acting
associate concertmaster/ concertmaster and with Orchestra Victoria as
guest concertmaster. She also performs with the Australian Pro Arte
Chamber Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Australian
Chamber Orchestra as well as teaching violin and chamber music at the
University of Melbourne.
Mathew Tomkins
began violin lessons at the age of 5, learning from Reiko
Moritz and John Hughes in Ballarat. In 1987 he began advanced studies
with Marco van Pagee at the Victorian College of the Arts.
While studying for his engineering and science degrees at the University
of Melbourne, Matthew continued his studies with Spiros Rantos.
Matthew was for many years a member of the Geminiani Orchestra,
appearing as soloist performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, and also
was a frequent concertmaster, including their European tour in 1998.
Upon returning to Melbourne, he took lessons with Mark Mogilevski, and
in September 1999 was appointed to a position with the Melbourne
Symphony Orchestra, with whom he toured Europe in 2000 and China in
2002. Matthew has played with the Academy of Melbourne and the
Australian Philharmonic Orchestra as principal second violin and also
with Australia Pro Arte. Matthew also teaches violin at The University
of Melbourne.
Helen Ireland
is a graduate of the Canberra School of Music, and was
awarded the Erica Haas prize for chamber music. She participated in
several Australian Youth Orchestra tours, becoming principal viola of
the Camerata in 1998. In 1996, Helen was finalist in the viola
competition at the International Winter School for Strings.
Helen was worked with many leading Australian Orchestras, including the
Tasmanian Symphony orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet
Orchestra. After two years as a scholarship student at the Australian
National academy of Music, she is in demand as both player and teacher,
working regularly with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra
Victoria.
Zoe Knighton
is an honours graduate of the University of Melbourne.
She studied with Michel Strauss at the Paris Conservatoire then
completed a Master of Music Degree at The University of Melbourne under
Christian Wojtowicz. She has performed concertos with both faculty
orchestras, Geminiani Chamber Orchestra, Astra Chamber Music Society and
Stonnington Symphony Orchestra.
As well as her commitment to the Flinders Quartet, Zoë performs duos
with pianist Elyane Laussade.
Zoë teaches at The University of Melbourne and in 2004 was guest
lecturer at The University of Tasmania
