Born in King Street Melbourne on 25 february 1855 McCubbin was a part-time artist until 1877. In 1886 he became teacher of drawing at the National Gallery of Victoria's Art School and with other painters established the first of the artist camps. A succesful portraitist he exhibited in London and Paris in 1897 He died in Melbourne on 20 december 1917.
