Born in Fitzroy, Melbourne on 12 march 1865 he studied at Melbourne's National Gallery School, Academie Julian Paris, and Ecole des Beaux-Aarts Paris. After working in Europe, mainly in Paris, Australian artist E.Phillips Fox set up an Art School in Melbourne as an alternative to the more academic National Gallery School. Influenced by Whistler several of his paintings show striking resemblance to portraits by Whistler.He died in Melbourne on 8 october 1915

Nasturtiums (Emanuel Phillips Fox)

2. It shows a woman wearing a printed mauve dress, black hat and black gloves with a background of climbing nasturtium leaves
3. The painter Emanuel Phillips Fox was an Australian Painter
4. The model in the painting is Fox's friend Edith Susan Gerard Anderson
5. She was also the model for other paintings by Fox, including On the Balcony,and The Green Parasol.
6. It was owned by the model's family since its creation, then it was purchased in 2011 by the Society of the Art Gallery of New South Wales
7. It was bought as a memorial to Margaret Olley, a Sydney painter and longtime patron of the gallery who had died a few months earlier.
